My Top Tips For Throwing Kids Birthday Parties

Real-life tips from a mum who’s learned through trial and error

I’ve been throwing birthday parties for my girls for almost three years now, and each one has come with its own little lessons - mostly learned through trial and error (and a few late nights). Tomorrow, we’re celebrating my eldest turning four by welcoming friends and family into our home for a relaxed afternoon of princesses, superheroes, and lots of happy little faces.

One thing I’ve really learned along the way is that birthday parties don’t need to be over-the-top or expensive to feel special. A bit of planning, some thoughtful touches, a few bargain finds, and easy DIYs can go such a long way. It’s all about creating a lovely moment for your children and I’m here to share the prep hacks that make it feel doable (and enjoyable) too.

✨ Tip #1: Make the Balloon Arch the Day Before

If you’re planning a balloon arch, do it the day before - it’s a total time-saver and one less thing to worry about on party day.

I used a balloon arch pack from my local bargain store (75 balloons for £3.99) and a hand pump (99p). Instead of using the plastic strip, I tied the balloons into trios, stacked them tightly, and secured everything with yarn.

It took under 20 minutes, felt more secure (nothing fell off!), and was much quicker than attaching balloons individually.

Balloon arches to hire in my area cost around £100, so doing it myself saved over £95 - proof that beautiful parties don’t have to be expensive 🌸

✨ Tip #2: Make the Food Yourself

Making the food yourself is one of the easiest ways to save money. Simple sandwiches, a bit of chopped fruit, and a few snacks go such a long way - and the kids are always happy.

I love shopping at Marks & Spencer for party food. With a budget of around £30, I can buy everything I need for the table, rather than spending more on pre-packed sandwiches and ready-made snacks.

It’s simple, budget-friendly, and feels a bit more homely too 🍓

✨ Tip #3: Prep Everything the Day Before

Anything that comes wrapped in plastic - plates, cups, banners, decorations - open it the day before. Take everything out of its packaging and pack it neatly into one big bag, ready to be placed out on party day.

Many banners also need string threading through or a little assembling, which can take longer than you expect - so doing this the day before is a game-changer.

This simple prep can save you 15-20 precious minutes right before guests arrive. The more you get done in advance, the calmer and more enjoyable the day feels - no rushing around, no stress, just time to soak it all in 🤍

✨ Tip #4: Set Up Simple Activities (They Don’t Need Much!)

You don’t need entertainers or big planned games to keep children happy. A few simple activity stations go a long way.

An arts and crafts table is always a winner. Set out colouring sheets, crayons, stickers, paper, and glue -things you likely already have at home. It gives children something fun to do as they arrive and keeps little hands busy while adults chat.

Other easy ideas:

  • Colouring or sticker stations

  • Bubbles for outdoor play

  • A small dress-up corner (especially fun for princesses and superheroes)

  • Soft toys or building blocks for younger children

  • Facepainting ( My sisters love helping with this! )

  • Music - Kids love a dancy party

  • Themes - Invite the children to come dressed up!

Simple activities keep kids entertained, encourage creativity, and help the party feel relaxed and easy - without any extra cost or stress 🥰

At the end of the day, birthday parties don’t need to be perfect or expensive to be special. A little planning, a few thoughtful touches, and doing what you can ahead of time makes all the difference. When things are prepped and simple, you’re free to slow down, enjoy the day, and really soak in those little moments, because those are the ones our children remember most 🤍
