Homeschooling Alongside Public School

How We Learn Through Everyday Moments

Even though my 4 year old attends public nursery and will be joining school in August, I still love incorporating a bit of homeschooling into our week. For me, it’s not about strict lesson plans or formal teaching. It’s about using everyday moments to help them learn, grow, and build confidence.
When my daughter was 3, she had already learned her phonics (A–Z), could count to 20, and recognised symbols like +, − and =. Now we’re focusing on reading three-letter words, counting to 100, and practising simple addition and subtraction with numbers under 10. Watching her build on these skills little by little has been such a rewarding experience.
Repetition and Consistency
One thing that has worked really well for us is repetition and consistency. Children learn so much through repeating things regularly. It doesn’t have to be long or complicated - just small moments of learning throughout the day.
Those small, consistent moments really add up over time.
Learning Through Everyday Life
One of the things I love most about homeschooling at home is realising that learning opportunities are everywhere.
We often practise numbers and letters just by noticing things around us. For example:
Looking at double-digit numbers on buses
Noticing “G for ground” in the lift
Counting birds in the garden
Reading letters and signs when we’re out and about
These little moments make learning feel natural rather than forced.
The Power of Play
Play is such a powerful way for children to learn. In our house, toys often turn into teaching tools.
We sometimes use Barbies to practise social skills, like saying hello, asking “How are you today?”, and learning how to take turns in conversation. It’s a simple and fun way to help build confidence and communication skills.
Final Thoughts
I truly find it fascinating how many ways we can use everyday life to teach our children. Learning doesn’t have to look like a classroom to be meaningful.
By being consistent, creative, and open to learning moments around us, we can help our children grow in ways that feel natural and enjoyable.
And I always love hearing how other parents approach learning at home. What are your favourite homeschool tips or little learning hacks? ✨ Leave them in the comment section below!
